O.C. rockers The Brevet today released the roof-rattling new single “Shapeshifter.” In today’s QUARANTUNES, watch them sweat through a 110-degree video shoot, hear them talk about getting back to basics and dive into their playlist, bursting with classics.
THE LATEST FROM THE BREVET
The Brevet have honed their made-for-arenas sound — expansive alternative rock with roots in Americana and surf music — over two full-lengths and three EPs. The Orange Couty-bred rockers, helmed by baritone-wielding frontman Aric Chase Damm, slid into 2020 with three singles, which the band says embraced “more of a ‘surf rock’ spirit,” owing to the fact they were written and recorded “in the confines of our lockdown/quarantined home studio.”
Their new single “Shapeshifter,” though, is not that. The product of a recording session last fall, it’s a roof-rattler with a shout-along chorus — and it comes along with a video (filmed in 110-deggree heat in Joshua Tree) that sweats as heavily as the song does. All it needs for full effect is to be played in a packed club. One can dream.
HOW ARE YOU HOLDING UP AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MANAGE THE ‘STAY AT HOME’ EDICT?
Ironically, this forced us to go back to our original “Brevet” model from way back: which was to write, record and release from home, and focus on streaming, licensing, etc. Since then, we’ve done some serious touring, and we’d be lying if we said we didn’t miss the shit out of that. BUT being in our studio and focusing on creating has actually been really good for us. We’re seeing it as a time to build our strength and get everything lined up, so we can hit 2021 harder than ever.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO WHEN THIS IS OVER?
Live music and hugs.
ANYTHING WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS PLAYLIST?
This playlist is basically what it would sound like if you were in the backseat of our tour van, and had to listen to all three of us jump in the driver’s seat and man the stereo …
