Quick hits on three new singles that landed this past week …
PAPER IDOL, “Clouds”
The new song from Paper Idol — aka Matan Koplin-Green — is the stickiest thing we’ve consumed since the caramel apples our neighbors made us. Over the course of 2020, Paper Idol has released or contributed to slew of singles, including “Money for Flowers” and “I’m Fantastic.” This new one? “I was on the brink of quitting music,” he says. “The pandemic had just hit, I felt pulled in so many directions and had no inspiration to create. One day, I was taking a walk and the chorus melody for ‘Clouds’ came out of nowhere … from there, the song flowed out in a matter of hours. Funny how a song about my confusion put me back on track.”
KITTEN, “Angelina”
Singer Chloe Chaidez is drunk on the Los Angeles life in Kitten’s new single “Angelina,” a swing back to pure pop for an artist that has seesawed from rock to pop over their career, which now spans more than a decade. Chaidez’s mother Natalie directs the video for “Angelina,” full of skateboarding, beach-going, convertible-cruising fun.
THE ONLY OCEAN, “Wasted Days”
On the heels of their July single “Watch It Fall,” L.A. alt-rockers the Only Ocean are back with a second taste of the album they’re prepping for 2021. Fans of the dark, post-punk-inspired music of the 1980s should press play. “‘Wasted Days’ is about wasting all your time on someone and knowing that nothing is going to come from it,” says Wesley Hill, who started the Only Ocean a few years back when he lived in Lompoc and has rebooted with a new lineup in L.A. “Sometimes walking away from someone can actually be better for the both of you. Some people aren’t just meant to be no matter how hard you try.”
