Take a trip — a psychedelic surf-rock-induced trip — to the beach inside Guspy’s head with his debut single, “Steeze Luíz.”
Guspy is the stage name for Jake DeGuzman, a 21-year-old self-taught musician from Santa Ana. He holds the DIY philosophy close to his heart, which is why he is independently releasing his material. He draws inspiration from psychedelic trips in the sand to bring forth a bilingual tune about being in love and dealing with heartbreak.
“Breathing with the waves / rolling with the tide / something special / by your side” is juxtaposed with “¡Qué lástima! / Perdí algo que amaba / ¡Qué lástima! / Nadie conmigo a la playa,” which translates to: What a shame! / I lost something I loved / What a shame! / Nobody with me at the beach.
He contrasts the life and death of a relationship by giving his lyrics a bilingual treatment. He sings about being in love in English and heartbreak in Spanish.
Guspy’s sonic weapons of choice are witty guitar riffs, euphoric bass licks and a transcendent, sultry voice that melts into the instruments. By the end of the song, listeners will be propelled past the hexagonal clouds in the shape-shifting sky and into the kaleidoscope cosmos while also casually gaining infinite cosmic wisdom.
