Ears Wide Open: Coma Culture

Coma Culture is the new indie-rock project from Eric Cannata and Francois Comtois, both of Young the Giant, and producer-songwriter Jon O’Brien, who once was YTG’s tour manager.
O’Brien, of course, has worked with a slew of Southern California bands in his Music Box Studios in Fullerton, including a collaboration with Cannata that yielded the latter’s solo EP, “Lonely Beast,” released last year.
The trio’s first single — and the lead track on their debut full-length “Camouflage,” out June 25 — is titled “Coma Culture,” a starry-eyed dream-pop number with a cascading melody but a droll message about living a life that substitutes appearances for substance. Think of it as Instagram in a verse: “I’m a modern person with not much left to say / Millions of distractions just to camouflage decay,” Comtois sings.
“‘Coma Culture’ is about facing the coping mechanisms we turn to as we seek meaning in our lives — uplifting instrumentals and verse lyrics give way to a chorus that borders on self-consciousness and oversharing,” the band says. “It was written by Francois Comtois, on tour with Young the Giant, in a Saskatchewan hotel room during a polar vortex and brought to life at the Music Box Studios in Southern California right before the pandemic hit.”
