Stream: Los Retros, ‘It’s Got to Be You’

Breezy … romantic, hypnotic, cozy, bright, infinite, otherworldly, multi-dimensional, funky, groovy … far-out … soothing, dazed but not confused: They are all words that analogously hang at the tip of the above-water portion of an iceberg when you’re pleasantly lost in the recently resurfaced single from Los Retros.

“It’s Got To Be You” is the latest kaleidoscopic single from the ever-nostalgic Mauri Tapia — the mastermind behind Los Retros — who decided to take a trip back to 2017 to find something soulful and timeless to release. The single was taken from some old recordings he made when he was just 16, recording songs in his living room, playing all the instruments; he was a living-room recording artist and he was his own multi-instrument session player.

Now 21 and a new father, Tapia finds himself wanting to further revisit those sessions and revamp them with new life. This spring, he will be reshaping six more of those early recordings and will be sharing them in a new EP, aptly titled, “Looking Back” — the follow-up to 2020’s “Everlasting” EP — via Stones Throw Records.

“We hope you enjoy your ride back to 2017 with this one,” Tapia says simply.
