After releasing a string of collaborative singles with the likes of Night Panda and Freedo, Beginners — the electro-pop outfit fronted by Samantha Barbera — has returned with the audacious new single “Can’t Get Enough.” And like Beginners’ catalog of pop candy, it’s the hard kind, with typical lyrical bite.
“‘Can’t Get Enough’ is not a negative interpretation of being addicted to something/someone,” Barbera says, “but rather the phase when you’re high on it and craving more and it’s all consuming. In a sexy, exciting way that leaves you out of control.”
That plays out in the video, directed by Nicol Biesek and Dri Sommer of SVN QNS and just accepted as an entry for the Austin Lift-Off Film Festival. It was inspired by the dance sequence at the end of the final episode of “Euphoria.” Says Barbera: “The main character is being carried around by all these dancers who are flipping her around beautifully and that perfectly expresses that feeling of obsession and addiction.”
The release follows the debut earlier this year of the all-star quartet L.A. Exes, featuring Jenny Owen Youngs, Rachel White, Steph Barker and Barbera. The foursome’s single “Temporary Goodbye” is the first from an album they’re releasing later this year.
Beginners, meanwhile, have an EP on the way.
