There’s a lot to like about “Fast Car,” the new single from Syd. It’s the follow-up to “Missing Out,” released in February as her first solo single since 2017.
“Fast Car” minds the speed limit with a steady beat, the singer-songwriter-producer’s buttery vocals and, surprise, a guitar solo seemingly plucked out of cold storage from another era. Then there is the video, directed by Ethan Nelson and Graham Epstein, where Syd and a friend are enjoying an intimate moment when they are comically interrupted. Score one for “hiking.” Their “Fast Car” (actually, an old Ford Bronco) really takes off in the end.
“I wanted to make something for the gay Black girls,” Syd says of the track. “I want them to see themselves in this and in me.”
Besides the new music she’s working on in her newly constructed home recording studio, Syd is currently working on a film, partnering on an apparel/fashion project in Japan, teaming up with an upstart Napa Valley sparkling wine brand, and, during the pandemic, collecting and rehabbing old trucks.
