Download: Eleanor Friedberger, ‘My Mistakes’

Eleanor Friedberger is better known as one half of the Chicago-based band the Fiery Furnaces, with the other half being her brother Matthew. But for the moment, she’s taking some time to present her first solo record, “Last Summer” (out last week via Merge). This news does not imply that the Fiery Furnaces are throwing in the towel. After releasing an album for eight consecutive years in a row with the band, the siblings simply want to explore individual soundscapes. While Matthew is attempting to release eight albums through Thrill Jockey within a single year (eight seems to be the magic number here), his sister is spending a month playing shows where that husky alto tone of hers can flourish not only in the solo light, but also in some pop that is more straightforward and Phil Spector-influenced. Songs such as, “My Mistakes,” carries over some light instrumentation from Fiery Furnaces, but are spruced up with witty wordplay, playful tempo changes and hand clap-filled pep.
