Father John Misty is back, and in most grandiose fashion.
The artist — real name Josh Tillman, but you knew that — has unveiled his first new music since his 2018 album “God’s Favorite Customer.” The elaborately orchestrated song, “Funny Girl,” introduces FJM’s fifth full-length, “Chloë and the Next 20th Century,” arriving April 8 via Sub Pop.
Tillman made the album in the latter part of 2020 with producer/multi-intrumentalist Jonathan Wilson and engineer Dave Cerminara at the former’s Five Star Studios. It features strings, brass and woodwinds, arranged by Drew Erickson and recorded at United Recordings with players such as Dan Higgins and Wayne Bergeron.
The new material figures to be on full display on Feb. 25, when FJM is joined by L.A. Philharmonic for a performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
