Ears Wide Open: Blond in Car

Blond in Car

Music is Robin Schorr’s second career. After a successful run as an executive for film and television production companies and inspired after reading Paulo Coehlo’s “The Alchemist,” the Los Angeles native made a left turn. In 2017, she dove into songwriting, honing her chops in the country genre and then working extensively for sync, placing songs in film, TV and commercials.

Her project Blond in Car came from her urge to write more personal music. Starting in 2020, she released a song a month, and last spring brought the release of the self-titled album, “Blond in Car.” It was just her first milestone. A host of singles followed, including “Want to Wish You Well,” which came out Friday, and the January single, “I’m Just Slow.”

Blond in Car’s music will appeal to those who matriculate toward the world of sophisti-pop — Ivy comes to mind with “Want to Wish You Well,” which is accented by a trumpet solo played by Clinton Patterson. Produced by Gabe Lehner, the new singles — which will appear on a forthcoming EP — exude a smart, understated air. “I don’t know / How to let it go,” Schorr sings from the throes of a breakup on “I’m Just Slow.” Far from the mawkishness of most broken-hearted pop songs, her plaintive unease, amid the swirl of synth and bass, should probably be rated for mature audiences.
