VEERS have done nothing but put their muscle where their mouth is ever since Englishman Andrew James got his footing in Los Angeles a few years back.
The quartet — James, along with bassist Nick Lanata, guitarist Spencer Schuck and drummer Chris Neff — return today with a new single, “Don’t Let It Be Me,” their first under a new deal with Merrill Artists. “The energy and sheer power this band has had me hooked instantly,” label chief Tommy Merrill says. “Soaring melodies, consummate musicians, plus they have an infectious, inherent joy about what they do. How can you not get behind that?”
Indeed, influenced by Britpop, post-punk and the harder edges of psych-rock, VEERS are for the true believers in the notion that guitar-bass-drums music can still move the dial. The new single comes on strong, with slashing riffs and big rhythmic shifts.
“Don’t Let It Be” is the first single from the quartet’s debut album, “The Universe Reversal,” arriving Sept. 16.
“This song’s basically about swimming against the tide, not being left behind and, in these times, how difficult everything is,” James says. “There’s always the man putting you down, and sometimes you feel like there’s not anyone beneath you — you’re at the bottom of the pile. Sometimes it feels like you’re getting nowhere, but when you look back, you really are.”
