Like many artists derailed by the pandemic, the Airborne Toxic Event are on the rebound. For the L.A. quintet, now well into their second decade, it’s been particularly challenging.
Only two months into the COVID-19 lockdown, the Airborne Toxic Event released their sixth album, “Hollywood Park.” It was accompanied by the publication of frontman Mikel Jollett’s book, “Hollywood Park: A Memoir,” which went on to earn deserved acclaim. But the band’s massive touring plans (and Jollett’s partially concurrent book tour) were scotched … twice.
Two agonizing years later, they’re back on — and the band has released a typically anthemic new single for the occasion, “Faithless.” It’s “about trying to believe in something in a world telling you to believe in nothing,” Jollett says, “getting lost in a world of hopeless outcomes and trying to find connection with others, or if you can’t, a new place to lose yourself.”
In March, the Airborne Toxic Event — Jollett, Steven Chen, Darren Taylor, Adrian Rodriguez and Mimi Peschet (who replaces the departed Anna Bulbrook) — launch a 46-date tour in support of “Hollywood Park.” For the first 29 shows (including the late April date at the Greek Theatre), they will be joined by opener Mondo Cozmo, who themselves just announced that their new album, “This Is for the Barbarians,” will be out April 8.
