If this indeed is Midnight Oil’s final tour — and they insist this retirement from live shows is for real — the Australian rockers bade farewell to Los Angeles on Tuesday night with (to borrow one of their song titles from the early ’80s) power and passion.
All the plaudits heaped upon the Oils when they last visited L.A. in 2017 still applied. This time they had two new albums from which to draw material, “The Makarrata Project” (2020) and “Resist,” released in February.
Peter Garrett, who turned 69 in April, still cast a commanding presence, as the band tore through two hours of politically charged material, devoting over half their set to songs from the albums “10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1” (1982), “Diesel and Dust” (1987) and “Blue Sky Mining.”
