Talk Time — the duo of Edson Choi and Mike Nissen — last summer released the second of their three EPs, “Necessary Evil.” It’s anchored by the title track, shimmering, yearning and weighted by singer Choi’s obligation to “wrestle with the devil.”
Today the duo unveils the brilliant animated video for the song — an homage to Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey.” It’s the work of Dustin Apodaca, Choi’s onetime bandmate in the group Dusty Rhodes & the River Band. It’s the second foray into music videos for Apodaca, who makes art and music under the name Midnight Peacemaker.
Here, two musicians are sent into deep space to find the meaning of life — because … where else would it be hiding? The narrative was written by Apodaca and Choi, who confess that they listened to Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android” to find the right “feel” for the film. What resulted is a bright, satirical send-up of billionaires buying their way into space, and interstellar adventure offering a wry commentary on technology and human nature.
