Many a song invite listeners “down the rabbit hole.” Zella Day’s new single, “Mushroom Punch,” actually takes you on the voyage.
At turns a lullaby, pop banger and barroom stomp, the song is the lead track on Day’s new album, “Sunday in Heaven,” her first full-length since 2015’s “Kicker” as part of her ill-fated deal with Hollywood Records. A lot has happened since — including penning more 70 songs for the new record.
Day describes the new song as a “psychedelic trip for the heart” — and that’s captured in director Sophie Muller’s video.
The genre-shifting album was produced by Nashville-based Jay Joyce (Cage The Elephant, Emmylou Harris), with additional production by John Velasquez and Alex Casnoff. Autolux’s Carla Azar and Cage The Elephant’s Daniel Tichenor play on the album, which includes three singles she released in 2021, as well as her powerful reproductive rights anthem, “Radio Silence,” released in June.
“Sunday in Heaven” is out Oct. 14.
