Video: Pigeon Club, ‘Is Will Soon Be Was’

More than a year has passed since Wayne Whittaker released his debut album as Pigeon Club — and speaking of time, that’s what Pigeon Club’s new single is about.
A jangling burst of neo-psychedelia, “Is Will Soon Be Was” is reminiscent of ’90s power-pop revivalists such as Velvet Crush and Gigolo Aunts. Conceptually, it belongs on a playlist with “Today Will Be Yesterday Tomorrow.”
“Time is indeed ticking, and a lot of my new material seems to be focused on that,” says Whittaker, who returned to working on his solo project after touring this year with Diane Coffee and the Grand Southern. “This song in particular is centered around the fact that there is no IS, and that everything in life is in a constant state of inescapable change. Which isn’t as scary as it sounds.”
Neither, as it turns out, is turning your band into a roller hockey squad. Jonathan Latona’s video for “Is Will Soon Be Was” finds Whittaker playing center, with guitarist Jeni Magan on defense, keytarist Nigel Wilson as a winger and drummer Amy Wood as (naturally) the goalie. Like the album, the new single was co-produced by John Would (Fiona Apple, Warren Zevon).
