Seven Layer Piano Cakes is the musical project of attorney and USC adjunct law professor Justin Hoyt, who, when he is not mediating legal disputes, applies his classical training to make electronic dream-pop.
True to the project’s name, Hoyt’s piano-driven music has layers. He launched the project in 2020 with an EP of straightforward piano compositions and followed in 2021 with the more ambitious EP, “The Patriarch.” Working with collaborator Ian Stahl (Kingsize Soundlabs), the project’s production game has grown more sophisticated.
And 2022 has brought a flurry of singles, notably “Remy,” a touching tribute to Hoyt’s son, and “Endgame,” a collaboration with singer Valerie Rose Lohman (aka VRL). The latest release is “Holy Water,” a cinematic, slow-building track a bit reminiscent of M83. Considering Hoyt launched the project during the stasis of the pandemic, it’s no surprise he’s crafted a song about making the best of what feels like apocalyptic times. Sprinkle liberally.
