You never know with Nick Rattigan. Which, of course, is part of the appeal.

His 2021 album as Current Joys, “Voyager,” grasped for and often reached a certain grandiosity. This week, he released the title track to the follow-up album, “LOVE + POP,” out Aug. 4 via Secretly Canadian. Grandiose it is not.

As Rattigan’s video for the song, which features vocals from Your Angel (Maddy Boyd), suggests, it’s as if the singer-songwriter got together with friends for drinks and dinner and by the time the digestif arrived he had this 2-minute curio.

“LOVE + POP,” Rattigan explains, was inspired by Lil Peep — in fact, the album features a cover of his “Walk Away as the Door Slams.” What fans can expect, he says, is an album with “a classic Current Joys-style song and a 10-minute house track on the same record. All these songs are also the demo of the song. They’re the beginning and the end.”

Guests on the album include Lil Yachty, Lily West (Lala Lala) and Slow Hollows.
