Coachella 2012: Girls and their evening bouquets

Who: Girls at the Outdoor Theater
In 3 or Fewer Words: Chillingly good.
Memorable Because: Whether dispensing psych-pop that sounds as if it’s been hidden in a bedroom drawer for three decades or meting out druggy rock excursions, Girls exude rare sense of intimacy. Maybe it’s because everybody now knows Christopher Owen’s backstory – his archly religious upbringing, ongoing struggles with drugs, etc. – but a musical approach that felt thin on Girls’ overrated first album blossomed on last year’s “Father, Son, Holy Ghost.” And the band’s initially soporific live show has followed suit; in the early evening chill Friday, Girls were somebody you wanted to be with. Owen’s own brand of dynamism shone, as did the work of bassist Chet “JR” White and the guitar leads from newly joined (native Angeleno) Evan Weiss. And there were flowers onstage. If the applause wasn’t overwhelming, well, it felt pretty cold. And people were busy snuggling.
What I’d Tell My Friends Who Were at Grouplove: Love is all around.
