Ever since we first saw him in the young band Simon Dawes, Blake Mills has been a marvel. And the guitarist, songwriter and (now) producer continues to be. He’s the subject of a new mini-documentary that takes a look at his prodigious talents. Mills, 25, has not only played astride myriad L.A. artists (and released nifty solo album, “Break Mirrors,” in 2010), but his skills have made him an in-demand player for A-listers (he’s touring with Fiona Apple starting tonight). And after taking on production work starting last year, he’s collaborated with Jesca Hoop, Haim, Dawes and Nickel Creek’s Sara Watkins in the studio. Mills also recently teamed up with ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons and jack-of-all-trades Matt Sweeney for a song on the forthcoming compilation album “Just Tell Me That You Want Me: A Tribute to Fleetwood Mac” (due Aug. 14). That’s their take on the 1969 song “Oh Well” below; the album also features contributions from Lee Ranaldo, J. Mascis, Best Coast, the New Pornographers, the Kills, MGMT, Lykke Li and Bonnie “Prince” Billy. The documentary (“Sound & Vision No. 004,” one in a series from Record Collection and Red Bull Soundstage), meanwhile, features a host of familiar faces: Benmont Tench, Tony Berg, Jackson Browne, James Valentine, Conor Oberst, Taylor Goldsmith, Kid Rock, Watkins and Hoop.
