The title track from Kitten’s forthcoming “Cut It Out” EP (due Aug. 28) revealed the L.A. quartet’s dreamy, sensual side. On “Japanese Eyes,” though, singer Chloe Chaidez and crew rock out, with the teenaged siren channeling all the New Wave frontwomen who were carving their legacies before Chaidez was born. For her part, Chaidez says that “although the band may seem to be moving in a slightly more electronic and beat-based direction, ”˜Japanese Eyes’ definitely has more of a post-punk/New Wave bite to it, and I’d say it’s one of the closest things that we have to a ”˜rock song’ on the album. That said, ”˜rock’ to us might mean something completely different than it does to somebody else.” Anybody who’s seen Kitten, of course, knows that rock means something pretty electric. Which makes this news item pretty enticing: Kitten announced today that it will do the Monday night residency at the Bootleg Bar in September.
