Sometimes the best music just seems to happen. And that was vibe Saturday for the 3rd New L.A. Folk Festival, where the genre’s myriad strains and its eclectic, DIY spirit were on display at Zorthian Ranch. The setting, a sprawling, rustic and detritus-filled expanse in the hills of Altadena, could hardly have been more perfect for the array of artists, most of them from SoCal, who plied their trade on makeshift stages on a gorgeous summer afternoon and evening. Buzz Bands LA contributing photographer Carl Pocket took it all in, from the pristine California sound of resurgent Beachwood Sparks, to the vintage country of songwriters like Geronimo Getty, to the punk-Americana of the Stripminers to the mind-bending chamber folk of Dirt Bird. And a lot in between.

After the jump, check out two more galleries – one featuring bands and one starring the found objects of Zorthian Ranch:

And what might you find at Zorthian Ranch? Snowmen, vintage vehicles and a “water park,” to name a few things (we think the llama got in free):
