Great Northern have been away a while. The indie-rock band anchored by Solon Bixler and Rachel Stolte carved out a niche, at least locally, with two albums of shimmering popgazing, “Trading Twilight for Daylight” (2007) and “Remind Me Where the Light Is” (2009). Today they unveiled the first song from their long-in-the-works follow-up – “We are currently working on our third record … It’s taking for f#@*ing ever,” they wrote recently on Facebook – and it ranks with the best stuff in their catalog. “Holes” features Stolte at her strongest vocally, belting over propulsive waves of sound. Welcome back.

Ah, good! I was just listening to “Remind Me Where the Light Is” the other day and wondering when I might hear more from this band.
