Ears Wide Open: My Hawaii

In one life, Yohei Shikano was a stage/guitar technician for Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros and Yoko Ono. In another, he’s the driving force behind My Hawaii, an L.A.-based five-piece exploring an eclectic, occasionally whimsical take on vintage pop. The Japan-born Shikano and core members Justin Deming, Miles Senzaki, Jens Kuross and Daniel Seeff will have a 7-inch release coming out Aug. 20 via Community Music. My Hawaii’s chewy center might be the obvious ’60s pop heroes, but in the four songs they’ve previewed so far there’s a Harry Nilsson eccentricity that distances the quintet’s music from being mere gold-mining.
