Ears Wide Open: Avid Dancer

Avid Dancer

Twenty long months ago, we posted an item on Jacob Dillan Summers, the former Marine who had drummed in several local acts, had fronted a band called the Rhone Occupation and, it turned out, had been recording a batch of new music with producer Raymond Richards under the guise Lauralaura. Since then, much has happened: Summers got married, moved to Alaska, moved back to L.A., adopted the band name Avid Dancer and assembled a group to back his new songs. Next year, that music – intoxicating psych-pop that trampolines effortlessly from the ’60s to today – will finally see a release. Avid Dancer’s “Stop Playing With My Heart,” which debuted Tuesday on SPIN, is a slo-mo love jam built on a stiff riff and love-drunk keys. The band’s live shows have revealed plenty of full-on rockers, but for now we’ll plop this sugar cube in our mouths and savor.
