Singer-songwriter John West was one of those feel-good stories, a regular performer on Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade who landed a major-label record deal, worked with industry A-listers and released singles featuring Big Sean and Pusha T. When things didn’t go as planned and West got dropped by the label, he set about deleting his various online profiles and continued to write songs, now under the guise Public School. The native of Baton Rouge, La., is “suspended on a broken note” and “dropped down a rabbit hole” in his new song “Don’t Wake Me Up,” a testament to staying true to your dreams sung in the sweet, soulful croon that helped him draw crowds as a street troubadour in the first place. If you don’t buy a CD, leave a tip, willya?
