Stream: Toy Bombs, ‘Radio’

The latest old-school volley from Toy Bombs aspires to a spot on any mixtape of paeans to the radio, and rock’s sometimes-dicey relationship with the medium. (Let’s see … “Rock and Roll Radio” by the Ramones, “Top of the Pops” by the Kinks, “Radio Song” by R.E.M., “Radio Radio” by Elvis Costello … Oh, there’s a list to be made here.) Anyway, radio doesn’t have what Toy Bombs need. “I can’t get it from the radio / It is up to the underground,” says the chorus of “Radio,” and ain’t it the truth. Toy Bombs, the band built around the collaboration of Utah ex-pats Cole Barnson and Brandon McBride, have been honing their live show in addition to writing more tunes – they’re synching their stage show to the light shows and animation sequences on the free Zappar smart-phone app so audiences can get an “augmented reality” experience. Sounds great, but we’ll settle for a nice 3-minute garage-pop song.
