Tired of fluffy pop and craving something that will shake the cobwebs out of your ears? Enter Barrows. The L.A. instrumental post-rock quartet returns with sophomore effort appropriately titled “Red Giant,” a concept album the life and death of a star. Stars are not given a twinkling and romantic context here; instead Barrows lays down five hefty tracks for a compelling sonic shift. Entrancing with its cyclic guitar riffs, its explosive rhythms and gritty texture, this is rock that will please fans anywhere between Tool and Explosions in the Sky. Produced by Toshi Kasai (Melvins, Tool) and mastered by Chris Common (Palms, Pelican), Barrows’ latest endeavor isn’t something that will settle for being background music. It will usurp your focus until the last second of the last track is finished. Barrows’ self-released “Red Giant” is out now.
