Morgan Kibby’s knack of weaving ethereal vocals and tingling electro-pop has always been a thread in her work with M83, but her voice is finally showcased on “In Cold Blood” (out now via Crush Music). On her first full-length under the solo moniker White Sea – she released a 2011 EP titled “This Frontier” and an accompanying remix EP – Kibby’s pop sensibilities spiral into rhapsody, especially on new single “Future Husbands Past Lives.” Much more ebullient than previous tune “Prague,” the track’s subject matter circles around lyrics “I’m never gonna give you up,” and as much anyone may love the dorky nostalgia of Rick Astley, Kibby sings it with an urgency dripping with seduction. From the suspenseful intro to the bridge where the singer lets out a pure, cathartic and impressive note, the song is a happy medium between her bombastic anthems such as “They Don’t Know” and the graceful ballads like “Small December” and “NYC Loves You.” If M83 fans have failed to follow Kibby before, they’ll have no choice but to hear her loud and clear now. An album that brims with heightened emotion, “In Cold Blood” is cinematic pop ecstasy from beginning to end.
