The year’s second installment of Chinatown Summer Nights lacked nothing, except for maybe a bigger Chinatown. One of the biggest crowds yet turned out Saturday night to enjoy the sights, tastes and sounds – which were capped by an explosive set on the LA Weekly Live Music Stage by Eastern Conference Champions, playing a set heavy on music from their forthcoming full-length and finishing with the new song “In Search of Fuller Moons” while a full moon was shining down from above.
While KCRW’s Jason Bentley and Liza Richardson kept dance-music fans busy at the main stage, L.A. artists rocked big crowds near the beer garden – from the sublime, propulsive pop of Madi Diaz to the Brobdingnagian harmonies of indie ensemble Afternoons to the crackling, guitar-tastic stylings of Black Apples to the in-your-face garage-pop of Wet & Reckless. Notably, Seasons delivered a positively exuberant 40 minutes of music as a last-minute fill-in for Francisco the Man, who were forced to cancel their appearance because of a family emergency.
The free, all-ages Chinatown Summer Nights continues Aug. 9, with the Live Music Stage being headlined by Moving Units. More info here.
