Ears Wide Open: KP

KP is the nom de tune of singer-songwriter Brittany Mullen, and she renders it “kp,” thank you very much. There’s nothing lowercase about her voice, though, a sonorous, evocative instrument that compares favorably to any number of A-list pop-soul divas. Earlier this year, she took over vocal duties for arty orchestral rockers Kan Wakan, and, after having released a trickle of music under her own name, the Florida-bred singer embraced her new solo guise in September with the single “Where Did You Go,” which earned immediate comparisons to Banks and Jessie Ware. This week, she followed up with “Never On,” with its elastic synths and spank-them-pads percussion. Kp’s resumé includes studies at the University of Miami School of Music, the distinction of being the first female graduate of the Bruce Hornsby Creative American Music Program and stints as a session performer in Jim Jonsin’s Miami studio. A full-length is in the works for next year featuring a number of producers, including Passion Pit drummer Chris Hartz, Childish Gambino, Noah McBeth and NYC duo Noise Club.
