Father John Misty’s new song “Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins)” derives its title, songwriter Josh Tillman says, from the fact that it was the “fourth attempt at arranging and producing the song that did not turn out perversely sentimental. Sentimentality brutalizes emotion. Much like ironic music videos.” Speaking of, Tillman’s new video for the song, made on an iPad with his wife Emma, is a pet’s-eye of the couple on their anniversary. Tillman explains that he originally envisioned a video of a cat wedding, with the felines dressed in costumes and Father John himself officiating and lip-synching. But, alas, “kitten wranglers are considerably more expensive than you may realize and said-kitten wranglers informed me there was no way we were going to be able get the outfits I had mocked up,” Tillman said. While we are relieved there is one fewer cat video in the world, it’s nice to report that there soon will be one more Father John Misty album: “I Love You, Honeybear,” co-produced by Tillman and Jonathan Wilson, is out Feb. 10, via Sup Pop.
