Fifteen years since their last album and two since they won the main stage at Coachella, Violent Femmes are releasing new music — a four-song EP titled “Happy New Year” will be out on April 18 (Record Store Day). “Happy to have some new recordings for people that have loved our music,” main man Gordon Gano told Rolling Stone. “Would be honored to have a few new ears hear us for the first time too.” As it turns out, the first song to emerge from the new EP, “Love Love Love Love Love,” was penned by Los Angeles-based Jake Brebes. Gano met Brebes some years ago when the young songwriter’s Central Coast band Threes and Nines opened for the Femmes in Ventura. The tune appears on the solo album “Jake Brebes at the Tigers Den,” which he released to Bandcamp on Jan. 29. Meanwhile, the Violent Femmes — Gano, bassist Brian Ritchie and drummer Brian Viglione — said they would be doing more recording this spring. They also announced a major tour with Barenaked Ladies and an L.A. date.

[…] Some bands get better with age, some lose their appeal. And some, like Violent Femmes, remain comfortably in a place of absolute perfection. The band is releasing a four song EP, after 15 years without a new record, for April 18th’s Record Store Day, titled Happy New Year. The band has shared they will be recording more new work and touring with Barenaked Ladies. This first track, “Love Love Love Love Love” is actually a cover of LA’s Jake Brebes. [BuzzbandsLA] […]
