Ears Wide Open: Children

On their debut album “Great River,” Long Beach five-piece Children become the latest band to follow the unsteady currents that lead back to the ’60s psychedelic rock movement. The album, recorded last fall in Mississippi, follows the “Feel Time” EP in 2014 and finds the quintet — Tom Gil, Jeff Steiskal, Graham Walker, Trevor Wallace and Mark Yates — awash in swirling blues, reverb and refracted melodies, all of which coalesce on “Great River’s” prettiest track, “All to Myself.” Here, Children’s attention to detail shines, with chiming guitars ushering in some vibrant lyrics: “I watched the grass emerge / from the clutches of the earth / And all the while it grew / Never met an ocean blue as you.” Pull up a beach chair and watch the waves. “Great River” is out next week on Future Force Records.
