Road trip to Austin: Buzz Bands hitting SXSW

3

Please excuse this self-promotional interlude: I will be in Austin next week at South by Southwest, hoping to open my ears to some new flavors and blogging as much as humanly possible – as well as co-hosting the “Buzz Bands at Cheers” party Friday afternoon at Cheers on 6th. The party features sets by seven […]

Tonight in L.A.: Randy Weeks, Oh No Not Stereo

0

[Fond birthday wishes go out to Edie Brickell this morning … now, for the rest of the going-out:] Ex-Lonesome Cowboys frontman Randy Weeks [pictured at left] just released a new album of his rootsy, good-natured pop, “Going My Way,” and the Austin-by-way-of-L.A. singer-songwriter celebrates with a show at the Mint. … Are these guys on […]

Origami bringing music fans into the fold

0

Neil Schield is standing on Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park, smiling and saying, “I’m an oxymoron.” And if you were more cynical and knew he was opening a record store, you’d think he could lose the prefix. In about three weeks, Schield is indeed opening a brick-and-mortar shop, Origami Vinyl, in a 400-square-foot space at […]

This weekend in L.A.: First Fridays, M83, Lambchop

[Happy birthday to Chris Tomson of Vampire Weekend …] Tonight: I think I’ve made this a monthly ritual: First Fridays at the Natural History Museum [pictured: Michael Stock DJing “in the wilds” last month]. Tonight’s fare includes talks by experts on Charles Darwin; then you can check on the evolution of music by Fool’s Gold […]

U2 doing Hollywood … in a small way

0

During their weeklong stay on the other coast, U2 has been doing it. Getting their boots on and playing secret gigs, that is. The Irish rockers will do one in Los Angeles on Monday, and it figures to be a small show. I hear the location will be the venerable Capitol Studios, but that could […]

Sophomore album ready, Foreign Born’s time is nigh

3

If nothing else, Foreign Born has become very astute at biding its time. The L.A. quartet arrived in ’05 with and EP and a single (“We Had Pleasure”) that should have put them on the map immediately. After they recorded their debut “In the Remote Woods,” the indie labels that should have come calling didn’t. […]

Tonight in L.A.: Jimmy Eat World, Deep Sea Diver

[Happy birthday to John Frusciante, long may you shred …] Most L.A. music fans have seen Jessica Dobson – she’s the guitarist in Beck’s live band – but not many know her as Deep Sea Diver. Signed to Atlantic Records at age 20, Dobson is quite a performer in her own right. (OC Weekly had […]

Tonight in L.A.: M. Ward, Cut Off Your Hands

[Happy birthday today to old f.o.b.b.* Linus of Hollywood, who appeared in the very first Buzz Bands column.] Maybe it’s because it’s early in the morning and I’m cranky, but some things just puzzle me. Like the energy spent on 98% of the stuff on YouTube. Take Johnny Bennett’s video for “Sister Pharmaceutical” [above], which, […]

Tonight in L.A.: Fujiya & Miyagi, Lido Beach

1

[A birthday toast to Robyn Hitchcock, now on with our shows …] Brighton’s Fujiya & Miyagi are back with another album of icy-cool electro, “Lightbulbs” – that’s their video for “Sore Thumb” above – and they play the Echo. … Pop trio Lido Beach, joined by Two Guns, rocks the Troubadour. … Laura Gibson and […]
