Pre-sale tickets have been made available for the third annual Bedrocktoberfest, the music/magic/beer festival to be held Sept. 19 at Bedrock LA, the Echo Park studio and rehearsal complex. Although no lineups have yet been announced, proceeds from the pre-sale, at just $5 per ticket, will benefit the nonprofit radio station and DJ collective Dublab. […]
Items from the notebook of a guy who still carries one around: ‣ Light a candle for local garage-rockers Moses Campbell [pictured], who announced last week they were calling it quits. From Facebook: “I can’t believe how far we came and how much we learned. It was a life-changing experience.” ‣ Three years after they […]
Another seriously stacked Saturday: ‣ The boundary-pushing DJ collective Dublab celebrates 15 years with a big party at Bedrock LA featuring music on seven stages, including an outdoor stage hosting Benedek, Seven Davis Jr., B+ and Money Mark, among others. The Carlos Nino-curated room has music from Mia Doi Todd, SK Kakraba and Carlos Niño […]

Expanding horizons – that’s “What We See” through the minds of two of L.A.’s brightest lights, Julia Holter and Nite Jewel. Their experimental electro sensibilities meld magnificently on a new song the pair has made for the forthcoming multimedia compilation “Dublab Presents: Lights from Los Angeles” (out Oct. 23). The collection (each song coming with […]
Must’ve missed the press blast on this one, but if your dance card is still free on Saturday night: Geographer, the Bay Area synth-pop band who were so much fun when they played the Skirball Center in July, performs Saturday night at LACMA as part of “Muse Til Midnight: Listen to Art.” The night also […]
Dublab, the nonprofit Internet radio station, DJ collective and general dispensary of positivity, marks 13 years as a Los Angeles concern this spring, and to help gain momentum for its biannual pledge drive (they call it “Proton Drive”), they turned to a founding member to stoke the flames. Daedelus has composed an original “Theme Song,” […]
The soundscapes on Julia Holter’s debut album “Tragedy” are equal parts hallucination and incarceration. Oh, and mythology, too, since the Cal Arts-educated Los Angeles composer’s work is based on the Greek play by Euripedes. Holter’s collages are glued together by synth, harmonium, percussive field recordings and her plaintive voice, and at times you’d feel like […]
Homage does not get any more direct than this: “Brighter,” the latest single from the duo Psychic Powers, genuflects at the altar of Brighter, a short-lived pop trio (1989-93) on Sarah Records. (Background on the latter’s single collection, which is recommended.) Psychic Powers is the trans-Pacific collaboration between L.A.’s Alejandro Cohen (he of the band […]
