Tonight in L.A.

Friday, Sept. 26: I don’t know, is tonight the night I finally catch one of those free shows at Disney Hall? … All the cool kids will be at the Fonda for MSTRKRFT and Calvin Harris, who will be worth every dollar if not every drop of sweat. Both times I’ve seen those acts it’s been delirious — where’s the after-party? … The new material by Johnny Flynn and Laura Marling should be right up the Hotel Cafe crowd’s alley. … Some local faves: the Oohlas at the Echo and the Flying Tourbillon Orchestra (whose name I promise to explain in an upcoming post) opening for Apollo Sunshine at Spaceland. … And two bands I simply don’t get but have friends who do: the clattery indie of the Silver Jews at the Echoplex and the y’all-havin’-a-kegger twang of Restavurant, celebrating the release of “Returns to the Tombs of Guiliano Medidici” at the Troubadour.
Photo of Calvin Harris towering over me at Coachella. He’s tall.
