[Happy 30th birthday to Norah Jones …]

nicostai-march09Nico Stai’s residency at Spaceland this month has been a high-energy affair, owing first to his quartet’s squeezing every ounce of juice out of his ’90s-vintage pop-rock, and second, to a lineup of buzzy opening bands that got things tingling. Tonight’s Flaunt Magazine-stamped finale (which follows Stai’s taping of a “Carson Daly Show” segment that will air Thursday) will be no different, with Australian fun bunch the Grates opening, and Tim James of the Movies and newbies Line and Circle also playing. … The U.K.’s Emiliana Torrini plays a sold-out show at the Troubadour, supported by Icelandic songstress Lay Low. … The Origami Records residency winds up at the Echo, with Summer Darling, Wait. Think. Fast and Kissing Cousins on the bill. … Great trio of bands at the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa: Aushua, Local Natives and Lemon Sun. … It’s the monthly 826LA benefit downstairs at the Echoplex, featuring the Pity Party as musical guests. … Also: Boston’s Junius at the Silverlake Lounge; Halloween Swim Team at the Alterknit Lounge; and Claire Cronin at the Scene Bar.

Obligatory self-promotional note: I’ll be guest selector between bands at the Origami Records residency tonight.
