[Notes gleaned on a gorgeous Saturday morning in L.A. …]
Half of me wishes I were in Grant Park in Chicago for Lollapalooza – the other half thinks that it’s OK that I missed a rain-soaked Day 1. Of local interest: The Henry Clay People (recommended by the likes of MTV) played early and didn’t make much of an impression on veteran music critic Jim Derogatis of the Chicago Sun-Times; and No Age’s Randy Randall, playing in a show in Milwaukee Friday night in advance of the band’s Lollapalooza appearance, slipped onstage and sustained a dislocated shoulder. No Age is going to try to play its scheduled festival set today. In the video above, Randall takes a fall at about the 2:56 mark.
‣ Nicely done: Nico Vega will be going on tour as main support for British rockers Placebo, including Sept. 20 at Club Nokia.
‣ Benefit update: The lineup for Wednesday’s Troubadour show benefiting ailing singer-songwriter Kelly Buchanan got a boost – the Rescues and Maria Taylor have been added to a bill that already boasts the likes of Glen Phillips and Sara Bareilles. Buchanan is recovering from a 2008 head injury that resulted in brain damage. Three members of the Rescues were classmates of Buchanan at Berklee School of Music.
‣ Nicely done, Part II: The 88 are going to play a Spaceland residency in September? (It’ll be on Saturdays.) Sweet, welcome home guys.
‣ Tribute: The Airborne Toxic Event’s Mikel Jollett, a former music journo, pens a tribute to the late William Garvey, who wrote the song “Goodbye Horses,” a tune that Airborne covers.
‣ Big world: To anybody who lives in the indie world, Spinner’s piece James Mercer’s dismantling of the Shins will be interesting. But maybe not as telling as the post’s myriad comments from people who have never heard of the Shins. More Godsmack coverage, please.
