shonenknife-myspThe Happy Hollows kick off their Spaceland stint tonight, and if you haven’t fallen under their undeniable debut album’s “Spells” yet, I recommend that you sample. Tonight’s opener has some mystery value too – Spaceland has promised an appearance by “secret guests,” and it’s really secret. And when the booker plays that game, it’s usually worth playing along. Stay tuned to Twitter for the latest. … Vampire Weekend is doing the most un-Ivy League tour of California ever – VFW halls, parks, private spaces, small venues … everywhere except gas stations, it seems. The NYC quartet played a Halloween show at the former Madame Wong’s in Chinatown on Saturday [photo gallery forthcoming] and Sunday played the Hollenbeck Rec Center’s band shell in Boyle Heights. Tonight they’ve sold out the Long Beach Art Theatre, where Avi Buffalo opens. … White Rabbits bound into town for a show at the El Rey Theatre, with Local Natives opening. … Mississippi Man, supported by Amanda Jo Williams, among others, launches its residency at the Silverlake Lounge. … Good times in Orange County, where Pop Noir starts its residency at the Detroit Bar supported by Nico Stai. … There’s no residency this month at the Echo, but it will be rockin’ tonight, as the pride of Osaka, Japan, Shone Knife [pictured] headline. … Also: Curt Smith (Tears for Fears) at the Hotel Cafe; Little Dragon at the Glass House; Dia de los Muertos Debauchery featuring Los Creepers, the Howlers and others at the Echoplex; and Daybreak Ends at the Viper Room.
