Lissie Maurus, who performs as Lissie, makes the kind of big-hearted Americana that springs from the loam of this country’s midsection – in her case, Rock Island, Ill. Her debut EP, “Why You Runnin'” is out next week on Fat Possum Records, and the songs were recorded at her new home, a farmhouse near Ojai, and with Band of Horses’ Bill Reynolds in Asheville, N.C. This month she’s opening for Ray Lamontagne.

NYC rocker Lissy Trullie looks like she just walked out of an Andy Warhol print. Her quartet’s edgy, angular rock got her signed this year to Downtown Records, which re-released her “Self-Taught Learner” EP (with four additional tracks) in October. When I saw Trullie at SXSW in March, I thought it was more style than substance, but she’s currently at work on her full-length debut with Suede’s Bernard Butler producing. Reserving judgment till the album is out in 2010.
