Tonight in L.A.: Mere Mortals, Black Francis, Links

by kevin on December 7, 2009

[Happy 30th birthday today to Sara Bareilles. Here's how to get your week started ...]

Links-coopergrossThe headliners at month’s free residencies should be familiar faces to Buzz Bands readers. Here’s a refresher course: Mere Mortals, freshly returned from a successful tour of Japan, bring their gritty Britpop to at Spaceland, where I hear that the “special guest” tonight will be Black Francis — performing with Grand Duchy, the project he launched this year with his wife, keyboardist/bassist Violet Clark. … Links [pictured], whose taut, bluesy rock caught our ears this spring, headline the Silverlake Lounge (Repeater and Giant State support). Links just finished up a new EP, “Echo Dogs,” and their show last month at the Roxy seemed to augur bigger things for the band. …  And it should be fun at the Echo, where the Manimal Vinyl label will host the residency this month — first up tonight is the Polyamorous Affair, who are every bit as fun as their videos. … Meanwhile, Rachel Cantu celebrates the release of her new album, “Far and Wide,” with a shot at the Bootleg Theater. … Also: Morrissey plays to a sold-out Fox Theatre in Pomona; One Eskimo hits the Hotel Cafe; and Signals play Pehrspace.
