Ears Wide Open: Shane Alexander

[I have a copious amount of new music to share this week – so much that I’m starting on a holiday. Enjoy yours.]

Shane Alexander has been crafting beautiful songs around these parts for better than a decade now, first as a member of the L.A. band Damone* and for the past four albums as a solo artist. (* I still love telling the story about how he sold the band name to a major label for a princely sum.) Alexander’s tender, tuneful compositions make his music a natural for film and TV placements, but especially on his last two releases, 2008’s “The Sky Below” and his new “Mono Solo” (out Tuesday) he mixes enough sonic vocabulary and confessional/observational lyrics to keep the albums interesting front to back. “I stay in the fringes” he sings on “Mono Solo’s” second track, and if he’s referencing his artistic place in the massive quilt of L.A. singer-songwriters, it’s a richer fabric, just having Alexander on the edge.
