Words and pictures can only go so far as to fully encompass what happened Tuesday night at the Mayan Theatre. At 9:45 Eugene Hutz of Gogol Bordello took the stage clutching an acoustic guitar. Beginning by strumming “Illumination” off their third album, “Gypsy Punks,” the rest of the members began to filter in, all wielding their respective instruments, from a minor-key accordion to a violin and even a three-foot marching bass drum.

Through their grab-bag of instruments, Gogol Bordello delivered one of the most high-energy energy shows witnessed this year. Driving the masses who turned up to simply move their bodies in any variety of ways, the gypsy punk band from New York’s Lower East Side rocked the L.A. crowd for two-plus hours. With the surging crescendo of energy that flowed through out the night, show-goers were treated to a mix of songs off the band’s five albums. Concluding with a five-song encore, the band wrung every ounce of energy out of the crowd, ending with a sing-along of “Alcohol.”

Again, Gogol Bordello proved a don’t-miss act. With their constant touring schedule and a sound that is uncategorizable, the nine-piece ensemble is a one-of-a-kind spectacle.
