Ears Wide Open: Johnny O’Donnell

0

Singer-guitarist Johnny O’Donnell, currently stationed in L.A. after receiving mail in such locales as New Orleans, Seattle, London and South Korea, played guitar in the band Holy Ghost Revival, whose very visceral sound was described as “car crash rock ā€™nā€™ roll” by NME. Having found Seoul after that quintet’s demise, O’Donnell wrote the music for the EP “Korean Debutante,” which is more like an excursion down a winding rural road. Far from straight-ahead Americana, O’Donnell’s compositions have a woozy barroom sagacity, and surprising arrangements to boot. Think, then drink. Or is that the other way around?
