Ears Wide Open: American Royalty

by kevin on November 11, 2010

“I got an obsession,” Billy Scher and Marc Gilfry repeat in “Lately,” their first single as American Royalty. But after you’ve ridden the song’s roller-coaster for 4 1/2 minutes, you realize the fixations L.A. songwriters have at least a couple of fixations — grimy synths and dirty blues rock among them. Full of samples and artillery-fire electronic beats, American Royalty’s forthcoming EP “El Ardemo” (on Guns in the Sun) bumps and grinds between danceable house music and mullet-worthy classic rock. The band, which includes drummer/electronic wiz Richard Morris, has played only a handful of shows, but one was for the HARD Haunted Mansion warm-up party. Trick or treat?

Saw these guys open for Moving Units and they were not good. Lame bro-tastic rave-ups and wanna be QOTSA rock.
