Next thing you know, Glitch Age will be the New Rage. … Although, there’s more than a kernel of seriousness in that quip. With producers and beatmakers always seeking new sonic turf, the ambient soil of New Age music seems fertile territory. And if Jimmy Tamborello (aka Dntel) is experimenting there, others may follow. Tamborello, who rose to prominence as one-half of the Postal Service,  just released “Enya Mixes” for free download via his Tumblr. So why retool the music of Ireland’s biggest solo artist?

Says Tamborello: “Even though she’s one of the biggest selling artists in the world she seems to get written off or used as a punchline by people in the music circles I inhabit. I think a lot of it is probably the other New Age superstars she gets lumped in with, or just knowing her for ”˜Orinoco Flow’ and that ”˜Far and Away’ song that’s in movie trailers. I imagine her more as a big-budget 4AD artist with a lush, ethereal production style that parallels the Cocteau Twins twins but is still all her own. To make my case I decided to make a DJ mix of all my favorite songs. But then there were parts of songs that I wanted to hear more of, so I started looping phrases, then from there it got more involved and eventually I had all these remixes …”
