Ears Wide Open: Jim Bianco

One thing about wiseguys: Their barbs often wield the sharp needle of truth. So it is with L.A. singer-songwriter Jim Bianco, who’s built a small legend out of rendering the basest human foibles – particularly his own – in song. His third album, “Loudmouth” (out Tuesday), is a pop-blues-jazz cocktail that’s at turns bawdy and tender, full of the kind of sing-along-worthy ditties and cutting couplets that’s made the raconteur a longtime favorite at the Hotel Cafe. No surprise that plenty of heavy-duty guests appear on “Loudmouth” (which was financed by his fans), and Bianco also appears in the forthcoming documentary “Sing, The Hotel Café Tour.” (Does he really make out with Butch Walker? Must catch a screening.) The cast of characters in the choir on the stomp “Sinners” includes Cary Brothers, Lelia Broussard, Ian Ball, Holly Conlan and even the Hotel Cafe’s own Marko Schafer. “At least we had our fun,” indeed.
