Download: Soft, ‘The Ceiling’

Shoegazer music has shifted in and out of fashion for better than two decades now, with the style’s true believers caring not a whit that Average Joe couldn’t sort My Bloody Valentine from a Place to Bury Strangers. Plenty of the bands who carry on so do with aplomb, including the contrarily named New York quintet Soft, whose 2007 debut “Gone Faded” exhibited a knack for melodic dream-pop and big anthems alike. Their second installment, “Dogs,” was produced by Chris Coady, who has worked with Blonde Redhead, Grizzly Bear, TV on the Radio and Beach House, and the new album will appeal to anybody who knows what we’re talking about when we observe that the track “The Ceiling” reminds us of the less heavy and experimental side of Bailterspace. If that befuddles you, thanks for playing anyway.
