Video premiere: Light FM, ‘Mercy’

On top of producing more than a handful of records for local artists (including William Reid from the Jesus and Mary Chain), Josiah Mazzaschi has been working on music under the moniker Light FM for 10 years now, and he’s not stopping anytime soon. Even through numerous changes in lineups (which included Smashing Pumpkins’ current bassist, Nicole Fiorentino), Light FM’s crunchy synth-pop has prevailed, and now Mazzaschi is putting the finishing touches on a fourth full-length album. The first taste, “Mercy” doesn’t stray too far from the juxtaposition of peppy reverb-drenched rock and introspective lyrics on prior albums “Black Magic Marker” and “Let There Be Light FM.” However, the guitar lines from Mazzaschi and Jennifer Whittenburg lead the song as much as Michelle Reeves’ keyboard riffs do this time around. Its Chris Coats-directed video, which also features Jimmy Lucido on drums and Nicki Nevlin on bass, is fitting with its black and white images bouncing from angle to angle considering the song’s shadowy lyrics and magnetic drive.
